Saturday, January 14, 2012I just reread a piece about 'the relationship between Jews and "non-Jews"'.
And again I noticed here that the German, and especially in terms of word formation possibilities certainly not the poorest language acts here somehow deficient. ('Jews and "Unjuden' 'would not exactly elegant.)
In English, the lexeme "gentiles" exists to refer to all "non-Jews". (At times, also used as a synonym for Christians, the Mormons do for all non-Mormons, Jews themselves.) According to Britannica derives it from the Hebrew word "goy" from (for "non-Jew"), then enstand by Latin transfer to "gens" (People) ,
Since "goy" in Yiddish and German (even in Hebrew) quite often has a pejorative, so disparaging meaning, it is hardly particularly to replace this speech impediment acting "non-Jews"; "Heather" would be a possibility, but at least Christians and Muslims Verbaeten in turn.
The whole thing has in fact a comic, but also safer side; I'm about a non-Buddhist, Hindu Non, non-Muslim and non-Christian? So especially something wrong? (more ...)
